Epilepsy and Essential Oils

As you know we are careful with essential oil use with children, those with low immune system, and the elderly. We dilute and sometimes do not use certain oils because of their systems or small capacity to deal with the components of essential oils. This list grows as you learn more about illnesses and medications and you know that there can be some interactions between essential oils and medications - and your everyday user may not even realize it.

For those with epilepsy they are either fearful of oils because of the components of several oils being something that could trigger seizures, or they have found out that some oils are exceptionally amazing for calming you down and that is where aromatherapy becomes a support in our daily lives. So let's talk about both of these issues.

Essential Oil Dangers and Keytones

Ketones are molecules that we consider to not be “user friendly” to that that are sensitive to neurotoxic properties. So to administer them you must do so with knowledge and care, and know which oils should not be used with people who have Epilepsy. Keytone molecules are irritant to the central nervous system and their general therapeutic effects are:

· Strong mucolytics
· Promote skin regeneration
· Wound healing agent
· Internally: potentially neurotoxic and hepatotoxic.

The oils we want to keep away from are Rosemary, fennel, sage, eucalyptus, hyssop, camphor and spike lavender. I also will sometimes recommend not using Basil, or Wintergreen depending on the actual use, and the client, and what their doctor recommends.

In my main oil group I stay away from without a doctor's approval are Basil, Birch, Coriander, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Oregano, Peppermint Rosemary, Wintergreen, Massage Blend, Digestive Blend, Joyful Blend, Tension Blend, Encouraging Blend, Respiratory Blend, Soothing Blend, and Protective Blend or any blend that contains one of the at risk oils, in the oils and oil blends we use and in any products that may use these oils in their base ingredients.

A survey of the literature shows essential oils of 11 plants to be powerful convulsants (eucalyptus, fennel, hyssop, pennyroyal, rosemary, sage, savin, tansy, thuja, turpentine, and wormwood) due to their content of highly reactive monoterpene ketones, such as camphor, pinocamphone, thujone, cineole, pulegone, sabinylacetate, and fenchone. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10460442

Newest updates state to be careful of any oil with neurotoxic activities. Therefore I am updating this with a recommendation to stay away from Peppermint as well as we've started seeing more reports of pulegone content being a problem.

What oils can you use for aromatherapy that have been found to be supportive?

However there are some oils that have been known to be helpful as well. Organic Facts lists that Mugwort's "soothing and the relaxing effects of this oil..." makes it very calming.

German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile are very calming and work well together for inhalation due to irritative reactions and . Note that the chamomile family can make Anti-seizure medications, such as phenytoin (Dilantin) and valproic acid (Depakote) react stronger in the body. Again, working with a certified aromatherapist, your doctor and pharmacist is the best way to keep away from any interactive oils when taking medications for your illness.

Patchouli has also been known to be soothing to some hypersenstive reactions, and for parents it can help with focus as well. Don't we all need a little more of that in our busy lives?

In a 2014 study and other relevant studies researchers concluded that the consumption of Boswellia extract (Frankincense Essential Oil) increases the learning ability in epileptic animals, which they were looking at because these seizures causes memory impairment.

So that is why I like to recommend using the balancing blend as support for relaxation and calming properties while we watch and wait on the groundbreaking clinical trial for using medical marijuana as a seizure treatment.

So are you using essential oils Internally?

I was asked about using essential oils internally today... that is the number one question I get asked about essential oils on a weekly basis.

My response was as follows:
I'm a certified aromatherapist and I trained both with an accredited school in Canada and in the US at Bastyr University. There have been less than a handful of deaths from essential oil ingestion and those were from taking synthetics...which is why knowing what is in your oil is so darn important. Some essential oils are not GRAS and should not be taken internally regardless.

Many sensationalist bloggers have been posting to never use an oil internally for the hits. If you look at all of the clinical trials using essential oils over 90% are internal use research. So that's the long answer...lol...The short answer is that if you work with an expert that is highly qualified they will know what you can and can't use. And remember unlike a Styrofoam plate you are not synthetic. Your body will absorb an oil in 20 minutes to 90 minutes (internally or topically) and then it will be eliminated in your bodies waste system.

Question was then: I thought it was Robert Tisserand who said something to that effect, or at least only ingest if you are highly qualified to do so...

Robert has said in the past on internal essential oil usage, as with all other ways essential oils are applied to the body, they must first be diluted in a suitable medium.

Robert has a fantastic gigantic essential oil safety book that I recommend, and he is one of the amazing guys that my instructor from Bastyr quoted a lot because of the training and work he has done with him. Robert's book is what I use, and what I recommend for professionals to have. So many companies just give advice that is not proven, or safe. As with medicine, food, fitness, there is no black and white of essential oils and so just saying everyone can use one, or they are totally safe to ingest all of the time just makes me crazy. But just as crazy are the folks that are totally against anything but inhalation.

Let's just talk Tea Tree oil.

The Swedish MPA has registered three Tea Tree Oil containing products as "natural medicinal products". These are products that are being used internally. In Germany it's sold for internal use, as it is in many countries. Yet most of what you hear is that Tea Tree oil is so toxic. Right?

The truth is that there are a few case reports of intoxication caused by Tea Tree Oil in humans. A 4-year-old boy ingested a small quantity of Tea Tree Oil and became ataxic and progressed to unresponsiveness. But 24 h after admission the child had recovered. A 17-month-old male child developed ataxia and drowsiness following ingestion of less than 10 ml Tea Tree Oil. (that is 1/3 of a bottle of most Tea Tree on the market that is being sold) A 23-month-old boy became confused and was unable to walk 30 minutes after ingesting less than 10 ml of a commercial product containing 100 % melaleuca oil. 5 hours following ingestion the child was asymptomatic. A man aged 60 swallowed about half a teaspoonful of Tea Tree Oil and had a dramatic rash accompanied by leukocytosis. One person lapsed into a coma for 12 hours after ingesting half a cup of pure Tea Tree Oil and suffered disturbances of consciousness for another 36 hours.

If you look at the history of most essential oils that can and are used internally the issues are from items just like this. Taking too much. Leaving oils where children can get to them. One drop is VERY powerful. People can always start with just one drop, of an internal use oil, and then if they don't get enough of a result take another drop in two hours. Safety is always the key.

What I find so funny is that people have this huge issue all across America with using a drop of essential oil internally, but they don't even consider what gmo / pesticide ridden foods are doing to them. Doesn't that seem so odd??

But...does that mean you should take Tea Tree oil internally?

Not without working with a trained professional. Tea tree oil has a relatively simple composition (about 30 compounds) and therefore is easily synthesized in the laboratory and this is indeed carried out: such oils are known as reconstructed oils (RCO) and are not natural products and may have unwanted side-effects. And tea tree oil contains varying amounts of 1,8–cineole, a skin irritant. Products with high amounts of this compound may cause skin irritation or contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction, in some individuals. Oxidized tea tree oil (oil that has been exposed to air) may trigger allergies more than fresh tea tree oil.

So keep all of this in mind when considering how you use your oils. Testing, important!! Knowledge, important!! Safety, MOST IMPORTANT!!

Opinions Are No Longer Free

It used to be that you could say that you used a product and it worked amazing for you.

It used to be that you could cheer for something that you were passionate about.

It used to be that you could share clinical data with others to help them with their disorders.

But even as that is your own opinion, your own passion, your own experience and backed by proven data there are those in the system that are on a witch hunt. This is turning the world of Essential Oils upside down. I have seen a lot of hub bub out there today over the compliance changes for one of the big three essential oil direct sales companies today, and I have to tell you that if I were a rep for that company I would be nervous that I had so many "cannot' do items and so little right to my own opinion. We join these companies because we are passionate about their products, and yes, they have to protect their brand. Right?

But when you join it's your business, and your opinion to share your stories. Those stories are what connects people to your brand. If you cannot even link your blog or social media website to your company website, you can only use company approved claims. Doesn't sound like a sound business idea. But I get it. But here is the deal. You should still have the right to your opinion. But just know, you can't use their name.

I know everything... but sorry I can't tell you about it. ;)

So this is the day and age that we are in. With companies having to tighten down the hatch and thus you can't use their NAME, or even LINK to their website for fear that some government agency will come along and close their doors.

I find it completely sad and silly in fact.

People don't believe it when they see some post that tells them the number one killer in Africa could have been cured with one little drop of clove and frankincense, do they?

Well at least not anyone that has educated themselves at all on the essential oils.

So why not just look for those that are claiming to cure without the back up of clinical data. I love clinical data for a huge reason... it was proven.

But what about a company that is allowed to say that they offer "natural" foods. Or even worse that they aren't required to tell you that they are selling you genetically modified foods. Or that you are inhaling toxins in your home and that it could be deadly in the long term.

No... instead we just don't talk about it. They are okay and good to go by the agency agendas.

Vaccines and implications to those with burdened immune systems, epigentic mutations or methylation disorders? Those aren't talked about. We can't talk about anything that isn't approved.

The APA saying that children should be fed organic? No one (even most pediatricians) aren't even talking about that. So stop trying to say that organics are better will you!

This is where we are heading. No opinions. No choices.
